Luke Laughs Radio Story

Luke got his first taste of radio in 2001 when he was a youth minister at the Toowoomba North Church of Christ. He would put the local Christian radio station on because as a youth minister he felt he needed to support the Christian station. Unfortunately he didn’t enjoy what he heard and he would turn off - until the guilts struck again and he performed his obligatory flick of stations back to the Christian one.

After a while of this happening God challenged his thinking with, “What are you doing? At least they are trying, what about you?” So Luke made his way to the offices of the station to volunteer his services although he was completely aware that he knew absolutely nothing.

A few weeks later he was offered a Thursday night slot and he created a show called Chuppatime. At this stage he still knew nothing and was terrible although he thought he was pretty amazing. There was a bit of saving grace when Tam came along and joined him but still the quality left a lot to be desired.

Through this process however Luke completely fell in love with the concepts, strategies, systems, and mission of radio and a light bulb came on. This was the thing he had been searching for, this was his place, his calling, his destiny if you like.

Eighteen months later, after being a part-time breakfast host it was time to move on to CVC (then called Voice International) on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. This was a crazy time starting a radio job surrounded by radio professionals and feeling completely out of his depth.

Luke kept learning and growing and getting better at this mission that God had placed before him and for around three years he had his dream combination of passions: radio, mission, and sport. He travelled to the Australian cricket matches, Commonwealth Games, around India, and more to fulfill this tough calling that God had placed upon his life. It was a struggle indeed but we have to be obedient to His calling.

Eventually God made the call to 89.9 LightFM in Melbourne where Luke had to sacrifice a paid work trip to Germany for the 2006 FIFA Football World Cup. He had been planning this trip and broadcast from Germany for around a year and it was a challenging thing to sacrifice but when God speaks you obey or end up in a whale.

Luke spent 18 months hosting a breakfast show with his wife Susie Holt before she left to have and look after their son Tyson in 2009. Lucy Holmes was then added to the mix and has settled in wonderfully since.

You can hear Luke and Lucy weekday mornings on 89.9 LightFM.
